Lusail and Al Ahli Share the Points in Thrilling 3–3 Draw

Lusail Sports Club’s first football team played out an exciting 3–3 draw against Al Ahli in Round 2 of the 2026/2027 Doha Bank Stars League, in a thrilling encounter held today at Al Thumama Stadium.

Portuguese head coach Emanuel Mesquita started the match with Arsha Shakouri in goal, alongside Amin Alireza, Franco Russo, Mohammed Ayyash, Omid Ebrahimi, Farhad Esmaeil, Hamed Reza Firoozi, Naif Al Hadhrami, Khaled Mohammed, Ali Nemati, and Rodrigo Moreno.

Lusail entered the match determined to bounce back and secure a positive result following the 1–0 defeat to Al Rayyan in the opening round. Despite falling behind in the seventh minute when Al Ahli’s German international Julian Draxler converted a penalty, our players responded strongly.

Following a VAR review, referee Mohammed Nasser awarded Lusail a penalty in the 11th minute after a handball by Al Ahli’s Benjamin Bourigeaud. Rodrigo Moreno stepped up and converted the spot kick in the 12th minute, scoring Lusail’s first-ever goal in the Doha Bank Stars League.

The remainder of the first half saw plenty of action as both sides pushed for another goal. Lusail eventually took the lead in the 45th minute when Farhad Esmaeil found himself through on goal following an excellent assist from Naif Al Hadhrami and finished confidently to send Lusail into the break with a 2–1 advantage.

Al Ahli responded after the restart, equalising through Ismaeel Mohammad in the 51st minute. Draxler then scored his second of the evening from the penalty spot in the 63rd minute to put Al Ahli ahead 3–2.

Lusail continued to push forward in search of an equaliser. Omid Ebrahimi found the net in the 78th minute, but the goal was ruled out for offside against Moreno in the build-up, with VAR confirming the assistant referee’s decision.

The setback did not stop Lusail from continuing to attack, and their persistence was rewarded deep into stoppage time. The impressive Rodrigo Moreno struck in the 92nd minute, scoring his second goal of the match to secure a dramatic 3–3 draw.

The result earned both Lusail and Al Ahli their first point of the 2026/2027 Doha Bank Stars League season.

Following his outstanding performance and two goals, Rodrigo Moreno was named Player of the Match.
